Castle near Florence
Castle near Florence. Close to Florence, this castle stands on top of a hill overlooking the Via Chiantigiana. The dominant position provides the property with vast views of the Impruneta and Chianti areas.
The castle is protected by a large park with cypresses and oaks that extends well beyond the perimeter of the ancient walls. The chapel is hidden by vegetation and seems to retain even today, thanks to the 19th century restoration, the primitive simple and austere look of a bygone age.
Inside you can admire a fresco attributed to the school of Giotto, while above the main entrance is a terracotta bas-relief of the school of Luca della Robbia representing Santa Lucia.
The Castle itself has aspects of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art, and in the past was a very strong and stately castle which has preserved its uniqueness over the centuries.
At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries during the struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, it had a starring role in the fighting, as it did during the even more violent fighting between Whites and Blacks.
Around 1550, the castle was enlarged and transformed into a villa which was for a long time one of the most elegant and prestigious residences of the Florence area.
Surrounded by 8 hectares of land consisting of woodland and arable fields.
